Unga Geneviève är upp över öronen förälskad i bilmekanikern Guy, men när han blir inkallad i armén och Geneviève senare upptäcker att hon är gravid, gifter hon sig istället efterpåtryckningar från sin mamma med en förmögen juvelerare.

Några barn på sommarlov i södra Frankrike leker med en åsna de fått i present. De döper den till Balthazar. Två av barnen, Marie och Jacques, älskar varandra. Hon är dotter till en lärare i byn, han är son till godsägaren av vilken läraren hyr bostad. Vid höstens ankomst reser godsägarfamiljen. Balthazar övertas av en bonde som driver åsnan med piska och spänner den framför stora hölass.

A sleeping car employee seeking a well-deserved rest is prevented from doing so by the crowing of his neighbor's rooster. Just as he's about to settle the score, he's presented with a gift: a rubber band around the annoying bird's beak temporarily puts an end to its vocalizations. But the animal can't be left alone, and Pierre has to take it with him on his nocturnal journeys: you can imagine the disturbance it can cause when, after being thrown out of a wagon window, it lands in the next van full of pheasants. The whole little world spills out onto the train, and the conductor is not at all pleased! Pierre manages to get a young passenger to assume ownership of the rooster, but not for long. Every time Pierre tries to get rid of it, it somehow comes back to him.

Paul leaves his wealthy parents behind to go on a spiritual quest. He meets up with a pilgrim, leader of a vegetarian cult whose members survive by begging for food in uncomfortable robes. The religious fanatics draw the ire of local peasants when they are arrested for stealing eggs. Marianne is one of the followers, and she and Paul go to a remote island to live off seaweed and vegetation, but a development company moves in to wreck the paradise. Paul is brokenhearted when Mariane goes off with one of the greedy developers in this symbolic film that decries the allure of the material world.
