A small group of French students are studying Mao, trying to find out their position in the world and how to change the world to a Maoistic community using terrorism.

De film volgt het leven van een ezel, Balthazar, begin jaren '60, dat parallel loopt met dat van zijn naamgeefster, de jonge Marie. Balthazar wordt door zijn opeenvolgende eigenaars niet altijd even goed behandeld. En dit geldt niet alleen voor Balthazar, ook de verschillende personages gaan soms wreed en onmenselijk met elkaar om. Balthazar volgt dit alles als een heilige, een stille en machteloze getuige.

Terwijl de oorlog in Vietnam in volle gang is en de dreiging van een atoomoorlog tussen de Verenigde Staten en Rusland toeneemt, leiden de inwoners van Parijs een steeds emotielozer leven. Gezinnen met een beperkter inkomen worden bespot door de maatschappij, en prostitutie wordt een steeds meer geaccepteerde vorm van geld verdienen.

Tijdens drukte rond jaarmarkt lopen caféhoudster en haar tweelingdochters, Delphine (danslerares) en Solange (componeert en geeft pianoles) de liefdes waarvoor ze zijn voorbestemd voortdurend mis, al kunnen de ontmoetingen tenslotte niet uitblijven.

De koning heeft de overleden koningin beloofd alleen te hertrouwen met een even mooie vrouw en kan geen andere kandidate vinden dan zijn eigen dochter. De prinses vlucht in een ezelsvel en wordt in een ander rijk verliefd op de kroonprins.

After a road accident, a writer, Edgar, and his wife, Mylène, take up residence on an island off the coast of France to recuperate. The whole little world spills out onto the train, and the conductor is not at all pleased! Pierre manages to get a young passenger to assume ownership of the rooster, but not for long. Every time Pierre tries to get rid of it, it somehow comes back to him.

He cares for his baby sister and struggles to earn a living by shining shoes and doing other odd jobs before his father returns. Both an American soldier and a Viet Cong regular are shown defending their country's political agenda.
