Un attore, Guillaume, una domestica, Yvonne, un ricercatore, Henri, una studentessa, Véronique, e un pittore, Kirilov, si stabiliscono in un appartamento per fondare un movimento di stampo marxista-leninista, Aden-Arabia. Mentre espongono i loro pensieri, tra i cinque giovani nascono delle tensioni che portano all'espulsione di Henri dal gruppo.
Geneviève vive a Cherbourg con la madre vedova che gestisce un negozio di ombrelli. Ama Guy, giovane meccanico. Tornando dalla guerra, Guy non trova più la sua amata. La sua disperazione però è alleviata da Madeleine. La storia inizia nel novembre 1957 e termina nel dicembre 1963. È da notare l'uso di colori pastello molto accesi in tutte le scene, spesso coordinando quello delle scene con gli abiti dei personaggi.

The whole little world spills out onto the train, and the conductor is not at all pleased! Pierre manages to get a young passenger to assume ownership of the rooster, but not for long. Every time Pierre tries to get rid of it, it somehow comes back to him.

The religious fanatics draw the ire of local peasants when they are arrested for stealing eggs. Marianne is one of the followers, and she and Paul go to a remote island to live off seaweed and vegetation, but a development company moves in to wreck the paradise. Paul is brokenhearted when Mariane goes off with one of the greedy developers in this symbolic film that decries the allure of the material world.

Claude Ridder decide di suicidarsi in seguito ad una delusione amorosa. Fallito il tentativo scopre di essere stato scelto da alcuni scienziati per un esperimento particolare: il viaggio nel tempo. Claude acconsente, entra in una sorta di sfera uterina e viene mandato indietro nel tempo della propria vita. Inizialmente si ritrova su una spiaggia, condannato a ripetere sempre lo stesso gesto. Successivamente, a causa di un malfunzionamento della macchina, intraprende un ossessivo percorso a zig zag nella memoria. L'insoddisfazione, però, resta. Il suicidio è ancora una volta l'unica soluzione.
Di fronte al cadavere della giovane moglie appena suicidatasi, il marito si interroga sulle ragioni di questo gesto. Non ci sono nomi, solo Lei e Lui, negli scarni, asciutti ricordi: i due si conobbero quando Lei era ancora una ragazzina e Lui cominciava a lavorare al banco dei pegni. Il matrimonio fu una prigione per Lei, non le venne data mai possibilità di esprimersi autenticamente. Il suo suicidio non è dunque un atto di negazione ma di dolorosa affermazione: questa vita meschina e dominata dal profitto, lontana dal vero amore, deve lasciare spazio all'altra vita, che inizia appunto con la morte.
