Cherbourg, listopad 1957. Madame Emery a její dcera Geneviève vlastní obchod nazvaný Paraplíčka ze Cherbourgu. Geneviève se zamiluje do Guye, dílenského automechanika. Její matka se vztahem nesouhlasí. Mladík, kterého vychovala těžce nemocná teta, musí brzy narukovat do války v Alžírsku. Zamilovaný pár se musí rozloučit. Těhotná Geneviève propadá zoufalství, protože má od svého milého jen málo zpráv. Na nátlak své matky se provdá za Rolanda Cassarda, bohatého obchodníka s drahými kameny. Spolu s matkou opouští Cherbourg.
