흰 옷의 백성들이 죽창을 들고 모여드니 앉으면 죽산(竹山)이요, 서면 백산(白山)이라! 전설이 된 미완의 혁명, 동학농민항쟁! 1894년 조선 강토를 피로 물들인 동학농민항쟁은 단순한 반란이 아니라 봉건의 한 시대를 마감하고 근대의 신새벽을 열어젖힌 전환기적 사건이었다. ‘사람이 곧 하늘(人乃天)’이라는 믿음으로 자유와 평등, 민족 자주가 실현되는 나라를 만들고자 했던 아래로부터의 혁명이었다. 미완(未完)의 혁명이기도 했다. 전봉준의 지휘 아래 서울로 진격하던 혁명군은 공주 우금티 전투에서 조일연합군의 막강한 화력 앞에 무릎을 꿇었다. 그러나 그들의 정신은 살아남아 3·1 운동으로, 항일독립투쟁으로, 4·19로, 6월 항쟁으로 면면히 이어져 왔다. 다른 세상은 가능하다고 믿었던 선조들의 우렁찬 사자후! 이 드라마는 ‘동학’하면 떠오르는 녹두장군 전봉준의 일대기가 아니다. 항쟁의 소용돌이에 휩쓸려 궤도를 이탈해버린 민초들의 이야기다. 혁명군과 토벌대로 갈라져 서로의 가슴에 총구를 겨눠야 하는 이복형제가 써내려가는 애증과 영욕의 드라마다. 역사에 이름 한 줄 남기지 못하고 스러져간 무명전사들, 혁명과 반혁명이 교차하는 와중에도 삶의 의지를 잃지 않았던 갑오년의 위대한 백성들에게 바치는 헌사이다.
