USA Network announced Wednesday that The Sinner will end with Season 4, culminating in “a satisfying close to Ambrose’s journey.”
It also fits the cancellation criteria in the bible, as the network announced it was not getting a fifth season while airing the fourth, but it makes it look like the show did not wrap cleanly, when it did.

It looks like every article that originally said it was canceled has been updated to say it's ending instead. The TV Line article where your quoted text comes from says the show is ending but has "cancelled" in the link. Same thing for this Deadline article.
Both articles also have the same statements from the creator that seem like this was decided beforehand so the status has been changed to Ended.
