I mainly watch the Oscars in order to see highlights from what are considered to be the best movies and performances of the last year. Great way to gauge what might be of interest/appeal to at some point seek out.
I'll probably do my typical awards-show routine of not watching live, instead recording the broadcast, then whiz through everything afterwards and solely watch an hour or perhaps 90 mins. worth of just whatever looks the most interesting (select movie/performance clips; 2 or 3 of the performed nominated songs; the In Memoriam reel; plus a smattering of acceptance speeches).

Well, you know this is a really 'girly' thing to say but in the past, I mainly watched just to see what everyone was wearing!
