Gary and Abby decide to invest in a Mexican company making methanol cars. Gary mortgages the house without telling Val. Gary goes to Mexico to work out a deal with Pete, the owner. Abby decides to follow, and Richard goes to help them with legal points. While in Mexico, Gary and Abby have their first kiss, but later he gets mad at her when she wants to cut Pete out of their deal. Richard warns Gary that Abby is trouble. Meanwhile back home, Val's upset that Gary didn't ask her about mortgaging the house or tell her that Abby was with him.

Mac moves into Karen's, and Eric has a hard time dealing with it. Gary finds out about Abby's contract with Richard and starts to drink. Diana tells Abby the rumors about Ciji and Gary at Ciji's recording session. A drunken Gary bursts into the session and yells at Abby that they're hurting people and ruining lives. Abby yells at Ciji that she knows about the affair and to stay away from Gary. Jeff tells Val that Thornwell leaked the story. Lilimae confronts Chip, who apologizes and cries, so Lilimae relents and lets him stay. Ciji cries on Laura's shoulder about everybody hating her. Richard is mad about how much time Laura spends with Ciji. Abby and Gary make up, and he says he doesn't want her hiding things from him. She says she was only trying to protect him. Abby then brings him to the lawyer, who has drawn up a contract making Abby an equal partner. Gary walks out, and later, he shows up at Ciji's, extremely drunk.

Laura tells Richard that she wants him to move out. Richard finds Ciji at their house, and grabs her by the hair and physically throws her out. Chip is packing and tells Diana he's moving to New York. Diana wants to go with him, but Karen says she will do anything in her power to stop her. Gary, drunk, calls Val and asks her to help him. Abby show's up at Ciji's looking for Gary, and threatens her. Then Chip comes by with flowers, and Ciji tells him if she doesn't stay out of her life, she'll tell everyone he is Tony Fenice. Next Val goes to Ciji's, looking for Gary. Ciji says it's Val's fault that Gary's drinking, because of the tabloid. They fight, Val pushes Ciji, and Ciji falls and hits her head on a table. Ciji yells at Val to get out. Jeff Munson throws a party at Daniel to launch Ciji's album, but Ciji doesn't show up, and no one can find her. Finally, Jeff asks Ginger to sing. Down at 'Colony Beach', Ciji's dead body washes ashore.

Mac has Karen admitted to a hospital chemical dependency program. Karen denies she has a problem .Abby is angry at Greg for getting her involved with Mark St. Claire. Mark tells Abby that the Marcus's house has burned down, so Abby tells Laura to make them another offer. St. Claire tells Greg he has one more chance to drop Mac, or else he will give incriminating information to his opponent. Greg has a press conference and says that Mac abused his power and got a variance for Karen's property on Lotus Point, and so he's asked Mac to resign. Mac questions Karen about Lotus Point. She says she gets checks, but doesn't remember anything else. Gary barges into Abby's office and says he is going to have her books audited. Jane and Mary Francis apologize to the MacKenzies for Greg and go back to Sacramento. Jane berates Greg for making the election more important than friendship. Greg wins the primary race.

Gary finds out that Cathy was in prison for 2nd-degree murder. He asks Abby about it. Abby tells Cathy to leave and threatens to tell her ex-husband Ray where she is. Cathy counters that if she does, she'll tell Gary that Abby hired her to distract him so she could steal him blind. Abby calls Ray. Greg breaks a date with Abby and sleeps with Laura. Mac goes to the DA who tells him that he might be disbarred. Mac goes to the Apaloon address and finds out it's a mail service. Some guys beat him up. Ben tells Val he is taking a job in South America, and Val doesn't want him to. They hug. Michael, Eric and Gary talk to Diana about making up with Karen. Finally, Diana and Karen make up. Mac has Eric drop off a bright orange mailer for Apaloon at the mail service, and then watches to see who picks it up. He sees Laura go in and come out with the bright orange mailer.

Ben comes home and Val cries with joy. The hitman actually shot Ray, not Gary. Cathy calls Ray's mom to tell her, and Laura overhears. Laura tells Greg, who asks Karen why none of the Ewings came to Gary's funeral, and tells St. Claire that he thinks Gary is still alive. Abby mourns for Gary. Greg tells Abby to sell Lotus Point to Wolfbridge, but she won't. Greg tells St. Claire that he is through dealing with him, and calls Abby to tell her Gary's alive. Ben figures out what Mac is doing, and is furious with him because Val could have lost her babies. Ben punches Mac. Abby goes to the MacKenzies and tells Karen that Gary's alive and Mac is using him to get to Wolfbridge. Karen feels very betrayed and confronts Mac. She's upset at all the pain he has caused and tells him their marriage is over, and gives him her wedding ring back.

Abby decides to lengthen Joshua's segment. She threatens Cathy not to date Josh anymore, or she will tell him about her affair with Gary and that she murdered someone. Mac can't get a Judge to grant him a warrant for Galveston Industries, so Greg gets Mac the warrant he needs. Karen unwittingly gives Galveston information on the investigation. Gary goes to Val's diner, and recalls how he met her in a diner by helping her out when it was really busy. He tries to talk to Val, who doesn't recognize him and thinks he's crazy. Parker and his friends beat Gary up and tell him to get out of town. Val's confused as to why 2 people have thought she was Val Ewing. Gary goes back to the diner and helps Val like he did when they first met. For just an instant she recognizes him and says ""Gary"", but then confused, runs out, and Gary follows. She insists she's Verna and has never seen him before. She tells Parker she wants to get married right away.

Ben has a flat tire on the road to Empire Valley. A truck with radio receivers stops to help him. Ben takes one of the receivers and tells Mac that he thinks that Empire Valley is only a cover for something bigger. Mac's men go to pick up Jamison and Woodside, but they're gone. Gary and Parker fight. Val realizes that Parker lied to her, and knows that she is Valene Ewing. She starts to remember Gary, and agrees to go home with him, but thinks that they are still married. At home, she doesn't recognize anyone. Abby tells Gary that Ben needs to take care of Val, and that he has to make a break from her, or they're through. Gary takes Val to the beach and tells her they're not married. She's upset. Abby asks Galveston if Mac will find out about the babies, and Galveston says no, that he will personally tell Gary about his heirs. Later, Abby sneaks into his house and goes through his desk. Galveston comes in and then suddenly has an attack. He asks for his pills, but Abby doesn't help him

Joshua asks to open Reverend Kathryn's show, but then takes up the whole 30 minutes. Rev. Kathryn is starting to become disgusted with Josh's ego. Abby tells Joshua to come up with sermons, and if she thinks he can sustain the show, she'll fire Rev. Kathryn. Joshua replies he doesn't need Abby to check his sermons or he'll go elsewhere. Joshua also announces that Cathy will sing on his show, even though she doesn't want to. Karen questions people about the evening Val gave birth, and tells Gary she thinks the twins are alive. Abby overhears. Galveston dies. The mystery woman comes in, and she is Greg's mother Ruth. She tells Greg that she married Galveston and she wants him to take over the company. An old friend comes to see Greg and tells him that Empire Valley is the cover for an international communications center, and that they will monitor and influence all government communications in every country in the world. Greg's still resistant.

Jean's superior tells her she needs to kill Greg. Mac, Greg and an agent find out that Jean and her associate are trying to kill Greg. Mac punches out Jean's superior, and he's arrested. Not knowing he's on to her, Jean invites Greg to her hotel room. Greg says he knows what she's up to and pulls a gun. Mac and the agent come in and arrest her. Mac explains to Karen that he couldn't tell Val that Ben was alive, because she would give it away. Val, hysterical about Ben, tries to buy a gun. Unsuccessful, she goes to the ranch and takes Gary's gun. Val breaks into Jean's store, and almost shoots a cleaning woman by accident. Gary finds her and brings her home. Ben walks in and they hug and kiss and cry. That night Ben dreams that Jean kills Val. Abby tells Jill, ""Let the second Mrs. Ewing give the soon to be third Mrs. Ewing some advice. The first Mrs. Ewing doesn't go away - ever!"" Gary and Jill decide to get married some other time.
