Children’s Ward returns to the biggest hospital in north Wales to follow the emotional stories of the young patients and devoted staff who treat them. The medical team at Wrexham Maelor regularly have to give emergency treatment to very young children. But when three critically ill babies arrive at the hospital within 24 hours and only one high dependency unit is available, tough decisions must be made. Doctors and nurses work fast to help two tiny babies who are fighting to breathe on their own. It’s also a race against time to figure out what’s wrong with a very young boy who arrives by ambulance slipping in and out of consciousness. It’s an anxious time for their families, but the staff move heaven and earth to ensure each little patient gets the best possible care.

A toddler arrives at the emergency department at Wrexham Maelor with his mum who fears he has meningitis. His younger sister is already on the hospital’s children’s ward due to concerns over the same infection. Back in casualty, a two-month-old is rushed in by his grandmother. His mother can’t be there because she’s already at a different hospital with his very poorly twin brother. The ward gathers to celebrate as a young patient marks completing his chemotherapy treatment and the busy staff make time for a special send-off for one of ward’s best-loved nurses. This series was filmed in January 2020.

Doctors face an unusual case which leads to a diagnosis no-one expected. A young boy is rushed into children’s A&E covered in an angry rash. Meningitis is ruled out and the medical team work tirelessly to figure out what’s wrong. Suspicion turns to a particular disease so rare that most of the doctors have never seen it before. If they’re right, swift action is needed to protect the young patient’s heart. On the children’s ward, a young girl comes in after accidentally swallowing a split pin at school. Staff must decide whether to intervene or if it’s safe to let nature run its course. And it’s an important day for a girl who previously suffered an allergic reaction to peanuts.
