Talented as a sculptress, Madeline Bates, a young widow, carves a cross, which she afterwards erects on the seashore in memory of her husband, who was lost at sea. Madeline lives with her father in a small fishing village on the coast of Maine. One day, while resting on the monument, a celebrated artist visits her home

We here introduce for the first time, a sublime religious subject, illustrating one of the best known hymns extant. A beautiful girl is seen clinging to a rock, over which huge billows are dashing, sending great volumes of spray and surf high into the air. As the maiden appears to be exhausted and about to give up in utter despair, a cross appears on the rock, showing at first thinly, but gradually growing clear until it stands out in bold relief. The maiden then takes new courage and throwing her arms about the cross, clings to it in safety, while the waves continue to surge against her.

A soldier, which army, which era, unclear. What’s clear is the evil he’s done. Faced with his impending mortality, he fears being judged in the afterlife. Only immortality will do. He meets a talking rock who promises just that - but he’ll first have to face his fiendish deeds...

For millions of years rocks have formed the fundament man moves on over the earth. Rocks are everywhere, so they are said to be the memory of our planet. How can a sandstone landscape be pastel pink and another is full of colorful dramatic lines? Why is one basalt boulder rough and porous while another appears as fine and polished as glass? Where do the rich granite boulders come from in an otherwise flat plain? What is the difference between granite and basalt and - why aren't all the craters on earth of volcanic origin? In my trips to spectacular places characterized by highly concentrated deposits of rock - the basalt on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the sandstone in the American West, granite in the cold French Atlantic and the marble quarries in Rajasthan - I find answers.
