One of the first US born conductors to receive worldwide fame, Leonard Bernstein is an exceptional composer and certainly not only due to The West Side Story. Instead of concentrating exclusively on his most famous work, Thomas von Steinaecker sets out to paint a complete picture of Bernstein. Thus, the documentary focusses on the American’s less known later works and on three compositions in particular: his Mass, the musical 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and the great final opera A Quiet Place. The film paints a vivid picture of the multitalented Bernstein, struggling with his role as composer and conductor, tackling the tension between successes and flops, between the politics of his time and his own liberal humanitarian claim. It looks back on Bernstein’s major achievements, such as his acclaimed conducting of Mahler and his involvement in the Young People’s Concerts, and it shows Bernstein’s work with young aspiring musicians as well as his political commitment.

Berlin is like an island in the middle of East Germany, a divided city known for its wall, the so-called Berlin Wall. Ever since its inception, this has been extensively exploited by Western propaganda. The notions about it are based in the general public on the fact that it was created to prevent people from traveling as they wish, from escaping. The wall that separates West Berlin from East Berlin is considered a crime against humanity. The truth is that the wall has caused many tragedies, the people on both sides of it are hermetically sealed off from each other. Those who are indignant about the existence of the wall, base their opinion entirely on the propaganda, which in the Cold War game manipulated the background to its creation. The film shows how necessary it was for East Germany to effectively close its border and the consequences of that for West Berlin.

A banana tree was uprooted by the storm and washed to the shore by flash floods. When the tortoise found out, he called the monkey to help him carry the tree back. The monkey saw the banana and wanted to eat it very much, so he proposed to the tortoise to divide the tree, and the tortoise advised the monkey to wait for the tree to grow before dividing it. The monkey refused, and cut the tree in half with an axe, and carried away the part with the bananas. The tortoise had no choice but to move the section with the roots back and plant it. After careful management, the roots regrown the trunk soon, and a tree full of bananas was formed.
