Wonderful to hear. Realize that yesterday is Jimmy's birthday, but 95!

  • Six make it to 90....
  • Herbert Hoover - 90 years, 71 days
  • John Adams - 90 years, 247 days
  • Reagan - 93 years, 120 days
  • Gerald R. Ford - 93 years, 165 days
  • Papa Bush - 94 years, 171 days
  • James Earl Carter - 95 years, 0 days
  • Nine unfortunately do not reach beyond 60....
  • John F. Kennedy - 46 years, 177 days
  • James A. Garfield - 49 years, 304 days
  • James K. Polk - 53 years, 225 days
  • Abraham Lincoln - 56 years, 62 days
  • Chester A. Arthur - 57 years, 44 days
  • Warren G. Harding - 57 years, 273 days
  • William McKinley - 58 years, 228 days
  • Theodore Roosevelt - 60 years, 71 days
  • Calvin Coolidge - 60 years, 185 days
  • Jimmy also breaks a second record, in terms of
  • Post-Presidency Timespan
  • (not counting those who do not survive office)
  • James Knox Polk - 103 days - (holds record for shortest timespan)
  • James Earl Carter - 38 years, 254 days - (keeps breaking record for longest timespan)

  • Many Happy Returns, wonderful President Carter!

He should have had a second term.

Neat facts, Quite!

@brat, I've always liked him. Seems like a good guy.

In my opinion, he didn't have enough time to accomplish everything he wanted to do.

I no longer remember what type stuff was going on back then, except for the Iran Hostage Crisis, as one of the hostages (who was in the final group released) was from my town, therefore there were yellow ribbons all over town, on trees, house railings, mailbox posts, car antennas, front bumpers, etc. for a long time. Plus many homes (and vehicles) kept an American flag displayed the entire time.

Thanks, both

Well, there were differences among congressional energy policies vs. executive platform. His "Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977," creates a new Cabinet position, and involves the implementation of alternative energy sources, which he applies to the White House with solar energy panels, but Congress rejects not only his energy policies, but many other legislative initiatives (because it's led by the other party, of course).

Carter's Judicial nominees were also fought by Congress, as were many of his other policies, so not much was getting done on Capitol Hill in those days, and that pattern tends to repeat itself all too often.

In retrospect, he often would speak of how the obstructionists bullied his policies, and this hurt the country on the domestic and foreign relations ends. Going into the polls for election 1980, Carter and Reagan were running neck in neck, but the terrible 1979 coup in Iran caused the 444 day long U.S. hostage crisis, which weighed very heavily in the polls, causing Reagan to look like the hawk to Carter's dove.

It was a shame about that, as the Iranians made a point to not release the final hostages until immediately after Reagan was inaugurated, just so Carter (who had long put in the work to achieve that goal) wouldn't be able to have that release on record as having occurred during his Presidency.

They don't make 'em like J Carter anymore.

If they do, then the bullies sweep in and wreck the entire works just because one who deserves the credit for doing all the hard work does not receive any credit for doing all the hard work.

Hope J Carter keeps breaking them longevity records!
