... 5 minutes in and I am already confused. Who is the guild navigator? Why is he able to boss around the Emperor? I don't remember this being mentioned in the remake.

You should at least read the first novel, it will help with the main details. But if not, here is the wiki page about the 'guild navigators':

You are absolutely right, I should. I think am properly into the story enough to warrant a read, that's for certain. But I cannot believe that such a intricate part of the story is left out the new version. Maybe they are converting it into a reveal for the second film? The first film certainly does a better job in explaining what the heck is going on at the expense of hurting the film's pacing if only slightly.

I'm pretty sure that they will be a big part of part 2? They are a pretty important part of almost everything.

I wasn't a huge fan of Lynch's Dune, I liked it but I thought some of the actors were wrong for their roles. I had already read the first book before seeing Lynch's film so I knew the basics but the person I saw it with was totally baffled by everything. I had to keep explaining to them what was going on.

It's too bad he couldn't have made the film the way he wanted. I read an article recently that he might do a director's cut. I would love to see that.

Yeah but knowing Lynch I doubt it will be more clear as to what is going on. As far as the actor's being wrong for the roles, talk about a white wash! As late as the 80s! Who would be thinking desert people would be as white as the actors they used. At least the new film addressed that. I have to say that I did think the new film was better overall besides the absence of whitewashing.
