Blofeld's hidden base in an extinct volcano was awesome! Any other thoughts about this?

By far my absolute favorite end battle in ANY James Bond movie! My god, what a set! Rockets, explosions, commandos rappelling down ropes and firing machine guns as they descend! That was one of the most incredible sequences in an action movie I've ever seen.

Indeed it was. And the piranha pool with the collapse bridge over it, very cool!

The end of this film is superb - this really is the film were all the classic Bond elements came together, including the raid on the megalomaniac villain's layer.

This, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker all reuse this template the best imo, perhaps forming the holy trinity of Bond Bond films...

I've always felt that Ken Adam never got enough recognition for the absolutely stupendous work he did as the art director for the Bond films.

@The Midi-chlorian Count : BTW, do you happen to know how Blofeld got out of the base? My attention was so total at all of the wonderful mayhem going on that I never really paid too much attention to Blofeld.

I can't picture this exactly but I'm pretty sure he made off on his monorail! There must have been a secret escape tunnel...

@The Midi-chlorian Count sunglasses I had forgot about the monorail. It probably led to a tunnel where he had a special "Get away vehicle in case James Bond and a lot of ninjas show up" mini-submarine on hand.

Another by the way, what did you think about the actor who played Tiger Tanaka, the head of the Japanese Secret Service?

If you liked Tiger in this film, you've love him as the ninja master in THE STORY OF RICKY, aka RIKI OH.

@Midi-chlorian_Count: I just finished watching YILT again about an hour ago and I noticed that Blofeld and his cat escape from his control center on a monorail car. He stops and activates the destruct sequence which was located in a hidden panel on a wall and as the secret hideout starts blowing itself up Blofeld gets back into the monorail car and disappears into the smoke.

You've got to hand it to those classic Bond megalomaniacs. Not only do they draw up plans for world domination from some exotic base but they also ensure they have some secret escape method just in case that same base comes under attack at an inopportune moment!

I once saw a TV series episode where two of the good guys are sneaking around the bad guys hidden base when one of the good guys says "Why do the bad guys always have the better architects?"

Now I learnt that Elon Musk got the idea of upright landing and reusable rocket concept from this movie.
