Discuss Requiem for a Dream

I know there are many depressing movies like House of Sand and Fog, Requiem for Dream, Turtles can fly, I've Loved You So Long, Boy A though they didnt really have that strong effect personally on me, I felt quite sad after watching, but Lilya tops them, other heartbreaking movies I can think of would be I guess Three Colors: Blue, Ordinary People, My Brother Tom, sort of also The Fountain works (I guess you can see some trend here with the D word :-)). Other movie I can think of which really moved me to the extreme, but in different way (more like raised my adrenaline level to max from anger) was Jagten, was extremely angry during watching.

I shed some tears during The Water Diviner... (:

Some emotional movies that I liked:

The Hours - one of my favourites

The Sweet Hereafter - I haven't seen this one since I was a teenager, but I remember that I couldn't stop thinking about it for days after I saw it... it's on my watchlist because I need to rewatch it.

Nobody Knows - another one that I should rewatch. I remember it to be very beautiful and touching.

Wit - this one definitely fits the "depressing, emotional and heartbreaking" category... it's good, but I don't think I want to see it again.

Some of the most depressing (but superb) films I have seen, apologies for those already mentioned by others above.

  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Bicycle Thieves
  • Germany - Year Zero
  • Umberto D.
  • Tokyo Story
  • Pather Panchali
  • Ballad of a Soldier
  • Ivan's Childhood
  • Au Hasard Balthazar
  • Kes
  • Midnight Cowboy
  • They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
  • The Last Picture Show
  • Cries & Whispers
  • Au Revoir Les Enfants
  • Grave of the Fireflies
  • A Brighter Summer Day
  • Olivier, Olivier
  • Nobody Knows

thanks for your time, but nowadays i watch pretty much only contemporary movies released at least since 80s, but hopefully your list will be helpful to someone less picky

@Filmisch i saw all except Wit, added to watchlist

The Elephant Man tops anything I've seen in relation to being emotionally drained. This one isn't far behind

I didn't care enough about the characters in it for it to break my heart. Sure, it was sad. That's about it, though.
