Powerful movie. When you do so keep in mind what concepts of honour, position and property meant to those men. Your forebears. Don't watch with modern eyes.
The movie sets out to show, through the points of view of the three main characters, that women didn't have sovereignty apart from the sovereignty of their men. That an attack on a woman, is an attack on her man.
This has consequences. That men must be enticed into this position of custodianship by giving them property and privilege. Dominion over their women. This was normal btw, until very modern times. Up to post-WWII era.
In a modern way, it labels the female perspective as "truth", as if to hammer it home that women must be believed. But the rest of the movie exposes the reality. Very rare to see such an authentic portrayal in a contemporary film. Ridley Scott is committed to his craft.
Thought provoking movie.

It was okay but not great. Better than the usual theater fare nowadays, but that is a low bar.
Frankly, I think The Duellists is a far better film, also based on truth, also Ridley Scott directed.
Rashomon has similar themes and utterly destroys Last Duel, in my opinion.

I made it to the 60-minute mark & turned it off! There were so many things wrong with this movie.

Damon & Affleck mainly, the back & forth between timelines was just too distracting, Charles VI was known as the 'Mad King' but he didn't have his 'first episode' until 6 or 7 years after the events in this movie, yet Ridley shows him as a bit 'potty' in the scenes in the beginning. Also, some people actually bathed once in a while. I normally like movies like this but I just couldn't past these

I enjoyed The Last Duel as well, it was a good film but not mind-blowing. A rather intense film with great performances by the casts but perhaps half an hour too long.

I agree with the criticisms above. Once you get past Matt and Ben and their hair! it's a compelling story. I watched Becket a few nights ago. Imagine how good this would have been with Harris and O'Toole! Stick with it the end is worth the effort. Never ever put Matt in a mullet again.
