I hadn't seen this film since it was released in the theaters, gosh almost 25 years ago, so I wasn't sure if my original impression would still stand ( I quite liked it then). Watched it again just now. I fancy myself a pretty good aficionado of the genre film-noir and neo-noir and this film can actually hang with the best of them. I really dig how they nicely fill in the plot holes in the scenes in between the closing credits. The bluesy music score fit perfectly as well. Sure the story was a little far fetched but it was still fun and man it had some really hot scenes too. Denise Richards, my god was she hot in this flick. Bill Murray was also funny as hell as the shyster lawyer.

I liked it too, in spite of the way it makes weird demands of the viewer. As you point out, some of those demands are resolved by the ending credits.
I wrote about this film a long time ago. The director has said that he doesn’t “do noir,” so go figure.

Then I guess noir does him because that film is noir through and through with an extra twist at the end: The femme fatale actually gets away with it. Its not only noir it's uber noir.

Cheers, movie_nazi. Maybe John McNaughton was just trying to cover his tracks, if you know what I mean.
