Charmless

Take an interesting premise and squeeze it into a formulaic romcom with leads with no charisma, add some low talent celebrities and the result is this charmless, humourless dreck.
A romantic twist based on a grown adult not knowing they are in love? Ffs.
Might have been a better idea to have explored how today's world would have responded to The Beatles' music as a 'new thing'. My guess is it would not have been pretty, and I love the Beatles. The only time it came close to hitting the mark was a brief scene with a Lennon who had managed to make it into old age. And that, sadly, looked like some kind of afterthought.

To be fair, the writer, or rather re-writer in this case, Richard Curtis, has had some considerable success in the genre before. But this really looks like a by the numbers effort. I am struggling to even call it a romantic comedy because it is neither funny nor romantic.

Just finished it on HBO and felt quite unsatisfied as well...it felt...unpolished. Danny Boyle has consistently hit it out of the park for me several times starting with 28 Days Later (which is a damn classic), but Himesh Patel couldn't hold the film up, that puppy dog, unconfident, sad look in his eyes wore thin! I LOVE Lily James (I crushed on her in Baby Driver admittedly), but her character was bland & paint by numbers here. The ONLY scene that touched the 'ol heart strings has been mentioned...an old John Lennon. And some of the stuff he said about the measure of success...he was happy, thus SUCCESSFUL! right in the FEELS!!! Made me revisit how tragically he died in reality.
This wasn't a BAD movie by any means, but it could've been better.

Definitely a lackluster film.

As a feelgood film it pressed all the right buttons, which is really all it ever intended to do. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
