Discuss Sicario: Day of the Soldado

This was a common scene in both movies although it was a bit more fleshed out in the first movie. To refreshen everyone's memory in the first movie they show the detainee and one of Graver's team making the detainee drink from a water bottle and Graver walks in says something like "You old devil you are making sure he drinks a lot" (out of memory so not totally accurate). Soon after you see Benicio Del Toro's character pick up one of those big water containers and walk into the interrogation room. In the room he walks his junk into the detainees face and what happens next is pretty much left to everyone's imagination. Now in Soldado you see the familiar water containers in the beginning when Graver is interrogating a detainee. A lot is again left to the viewers imagination, but there is part where Graver catches the detainee looking at the water containers in fear and Graver says something to the effect of him being afraid of waterboarding, but that is something they do when they can not do torture and them being in Africa kind of makes it an everything goes affair. I kind of assumed from that dialogue that they had not been used on the detainee yet and were not ultimately used at all. How did you guys interprete this scene and what Graver was saying? It kind of makes it seem that they might've used the water in the first movie since they were located on US soil for waterboarding, but then again I assume making the guy drink a lot doesn't make it any more or less effective so what was up with that and what was the idea with the whole water thing.

I think it was just a nod to the first movie, and worked in the context of the scene because they're intimidating to the detainee. I liked it as a little throwback reference. Also liked how they alluded to it then went a whole heck of a lot further, past physical violence to the guy and straight to lethal violence to his family. Wouldn't be surprised if this stuff happened.

I haven't seen the second one yet, but for the first one I initially thought Alejandro may have raped Guillermo... But the more I thought about it I asked myself why the fuck would Matt stay in the room while he raped him? Seemed weird to me. Alejandro was just showing dominance when he stood so close to Guillermo, nothing sexual. So I think its one of two things... I think that the water cure torture technique might be possible since the other agent was already making Alejandro drink water before Guillermo came into the room. Or maybe Alejandro carried the water jug so that when he passed the other agents in the hallway going towards the interrogation room it would give the impression that he was going to do some traditional water boarding to Guillermo... But instead he "water boarded" him by pissing in his mouth as opposed to using the clean jug of water. Which is why you see it unopened and unused. It's evidently a pretty common tactic in Special Ops. Just my opinion though.

Not sure how accurate this is but someone told me that the reason they made him drink all the water was to get his kidneys and bladder filled. Then getting a punch to the kidney with a full bladder causes an extraordinary amount of pain. I've never seen anything regarding this technique online anywhere so I don't know how true that is. But I can imagine getting punched with a full bladder would not feel good
