... Will Hollywood's all-action man finally get the ultimate reward? After decades of failing to win an Oscar with serious acting roles, Tom Cruise's crowd-pleasing anti-woke Top Gun sequel could be the one that snares him an Academy Award

... Excerpt from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Lands Best Picture Nom & Five Others; No Tom Cruise Acting Nom But A Nod For Bringing Moviegoing Back From Pandemic:

Top Gun: Maverick scored six Oscar nominations this morning including best picture, along with adapted screenplay by Ehren Kruger & Eric Warren Singer, sound, film editing, visual effects and original song for the Lady Gaga tune “Hold My Hand”. The film’s emergence as a best picture threat might have seemed an impossible mission, in that a summer movie that grosses nearly $1.5 billion worldwide moves popcorn, not Oscar voters. This Paramount Pictures film has proven to be the exception and one big reason is this: if Tom Cruise didn’t rescue the theatrical box office business following the Covid pandemic, he certainly pulled it out of a nosedive. While Cruise did not get nominated for best actor, he is squarely in the mix as producer, alongside first time Oscar nominee and hitmaking stalwart Jerry Bruckheimer, Christopher McQuarrie (a double nominee counting the adapted screenplay category) and Skydance principal David Ellison.

... Excerpt from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Producer Jerry Bruckheimer on His First Oscars Nomination: “It Finally Got Around to Me”:

Jerry Bruckheimer has produced more than 50 films, but, for the first time at age 79, the Top Gun: Maverick producer can add a new line to his resume: Oscar nominee.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and it finally got around to me,” Bruckheimer said, speaking Tuesday morning from his home in Los Angeles, after learning that the Tom Cruise-starring action sequel has been nominated for six Oscars, including best picture.

The Paramount movie, which has grossed $1.49 billion worldwide, is also nominated in the adapted screenplay, original song for Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand,” editing, visual effects and sound categories.

“We brought an older audience back to theaters who hadn’t been going,” Bruckheimer says, of Top Gun: Maverick, which opened May 27 with a 96 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare A+ Cinemascore from audiences. “And I think the Academy responded to that.”

Cruise, while nominated as a producer alongside Bruckheimer, David Ellison and Christopher McQuarrie, was not nominated in the best actor category for his performance in the film, nor was director Joseph Kosinski nominated.

“They certainly deserve [to be nominated],” Bruckheimer said. “Tom willed this into existence. He’s the heartbeat of the movie.”

Side notes:

This is more than just an action flick with Tom Cruise. It is the blockbuster that has brought the audience back to the theaters with its uplifting message. In America the patriotic undertone has made it the number one movie of 2022 at the Domestic Box office with $718,318,561.

Cruise is a 50/50 shot for best actor: He's long past his due for the sort of obligatory recognition every Big Star eventually receives, no matter how negligible their attacking abilities. Think here John Wayne and Jennifer Connelly getting Oscars. He's also a white, ostensibly heterosexual male, in a year where Cate Blanchett is getting applauded for regurgitating a few Woke bromides about The Patriarchy during her awards speech at The Critic's Choice Awards. This diminishes the sureness of this year being the one in which we gets The Oscar

Tom Cruise has not been nominated for Best Actor.

See OP above for the 6 Oscar nominations.

....

Although on second thought, such a sight would the most exciting thing to have happened at The Oscars in decades. Let's pray that TG2 DOES win Best Picture after all!!!

If it wins, critics on YouTube will celebrate and they will never stop talking about it.

And Tom Cruise...

One Oscar.
