Apparently, Charlie Heaton was given some very bad direction or was told that his character was from a different part of the country but his accent was nothing like anyone in Kentucky or any other part of the Midwest... not sure what he was thinking or what the director was thinking to allow his horrible performance.
There is a flashback/nightmare type of scene of coal miners... yeah, they DO NOT use pickaxes and they do not stand shoulder-to-shoulder trying to tear down a BRICK TUNNEL (that they are all standing in)... what a stupid scene that was... imagined or not...

Just watched it so I could respond to this. It was not meant to be taken in any way as reality, just a representation of Sam's claustrophobia. As for Charlie Heaton's Kentucky accent, I can't really say anything about that since I've never been to Kentucky.
