方德胜（刘德华 饰）和何宝玲（刘锦玲 饰）是同乡，亦是青梅竹马的恋人，彼此之间感情十分要好，然而，方德胜的心中怀揣着成为演员的理想，为了实现这梦想，方德胜不得不离开老家，离开何宝玲，来到大城市，奔向自己的远大前程。

一次偶然中，方德胜遇见了兰姐（吴家丽 饰），后者对方德胜十分赏识，在兰姐的推荐之下，方德胜得到了电影《天长地久》中男主角的角色，让他没有想到的是，此片的女主角，竟然正是何宝玲。在一连串的误会之中，方德胜以为何宝玲背叛了自己，两人自此陷入了剪不断理还乱的情感纠葛之中，并双双为此付出了惨痛的代价。

A young woman searches for information about her father who starred in the classic movie 'Days of Tomorrow', which she is helping to remake. She finds out about his restless youth, career in the 1970s Hong Kong film industry, and tragic love affair.
