I watched this on TV in the late 1980s; as I recall it was a pretty violent cartoon movie for the time. If I remember correctly, one of the main GI Joe good guys, Duke, died after getting stabbed through the chest with a wooden pole; and Cobra Commander degenerated into his original form of a snake and disappeared into the jungle.
I agree that it's a fun movie. I wouldn't want to see a remake, though. I've always preferred this older animation style, compared to just about anything that's being done today. Movies like this, the old rotoscoped Lord of the Rings, and most of the Studio Ghibli stuff are my favorite style when it comes to animation, and I think it's very unfortunate that we don't see more of it.

Ya. That's a given. Although, I haven't re-watched it yet. Hopefully the disc will arrive this week. But hey, it was made in the 80s. Violence was totally acceptable in cartoons. My favorite was Nemesis Enforcer, the soulless abomination made of carrion and hate. He never spoke, just grunted and kicked a__. I miss the 80s.
Yeah, and let's not forget the five-episode (?) story-arc where the GI Joe team arrives in an alternate timeline, where Cobra has defeated GI Joe and rules the world-- complete with a satellite system which keeps the planet in perpetual darkness.
I don't remember Nemesis Enforcer, but I also liked Star Blazers (actually a 1970s cartoon, but shown in the '80s), and Robotech, both shows which regularly had good and bad guys dying. Different times, compared to the tame cartoons that are out today. Enjoy your disc when it arrives!
