Discuss Night Drum

Item: The Adulteress

Language: en-US

Type of Problem: Incorrect_content

Extra Details: This film was never released as "The Adultress" in English. That is the English translation of a German title for the film. In the US, the film is known as "Night Drum" and that is the literal English translation of the original Japanese title. So I believe "Night Drum" should be given in the Translated Title (English) field of the record.

For any moderator that may catch this, I concur that "The Adultress" is an inappropriate title for the film. The history of this particular usage proves elusive, and apart from it bearing no connection to the Japanese title, it is technically a spoiler for the film. "Night Drum"appears to be the exclusive release title for this movie in English, and is the literal translation of 'Yoru no tsuzumi.' (The translation of the old West German title is actually "The Samurai's Wife," unless it has appeared differently elsewhere.)

While there are no records of a theatrical release in the English-speaking world, one could imagine it once screened with the more salacious title to draw a crowd; this was the case with 'Thérèse Raquin' on its American theatrical release in the same year, 1958, and similarly defaced with this same, insipid title. If a nitwit, at some late date in the past, heard a plot outline and hung "The Adulteress" up on a marquee, let us not permit the injustice to continue. This is "Night Drum."

I've been waiting for a moderator to change the film's title since the field is locked. Since you agree that the correct title of the film is NIGHT DRUM, is there any reason why it hasn't been corrected? Thanks.

Night Drum added as translated English title. Thanks. We are unusually far behind with content reports, which is why this was delayed. Closing topic.
