A tense crime drama with a surprise ending. Professor Richard Wanley (played by Edward Robinson) falls for femme fatale Alice Reed (played by Joan Bennett). Her lover is killed and Richard struggles to cover it up. There are twists and turns and sometimes it's just seriously funny.
"...one cigar, another drink, early to bed."

I find it a fun noir watch. Pairs with the more serious (but also funny) Scarlet Street which was made after this with the same cast -- but set earlier in the 1930s.
