Discuss The Best Offer

Enjoyed this, but curious as to everyone's views on the following:

  1. Was the Night and Day cafe run by Robert (or at least built by him)?
  2. Why was the autistic lady in the cafe opposite the villa also called Claire? Was that just to suggest they got the idea of the name from her?
  3. Why did Billy betray him when it seemed like they had a long history together? And was it Billy masterminded the whole con given that no-one else would have known about Virgil's secret room filled with paintings (or the quirks of his personality, his susceptibilities and vulnerabilities)?
  4. If the Automaton would have been worth so much money, and Robert knew it, why would he give it away freely at the end (or indeed at all, since he would have needed to plant the cogs in the house first) - or are we to assume that's a forgery too? Otherwise why not just make it and collect his share of the money? It seems like his relationship with Virgil could have been profitable for many years, this seems like an obscure and unnecessary trick to pull.
  5. Why did Claire say, "if anything happens to us, I do love you"? It seems evident by her abandonment that she didn't, and she didn't need to say that.
  6. Aside from the fact he seems to be hospitalised in some kind of care home at the end - do people agree the whole experience was mostly positive for him? He let his guard down, socialised, loved, and the irony of the whole situation is, however fleetingly, he experienced something real, not just the artworks on his wall.

Good film, even if it was preposterous!

As to your last point on the movie, I agree that while a major theme of the film is the life he missed out on, connecting with another person, etc... it is a very large price to pay to learn that lesson!

I didn't understand if the scenes in which he is in the clinic are before or after those in which he investigates what happened.
