I thought this was great when I saw it the first time and watching it again hasn't changed my view.
The balancing of the two timelines and performances from McAvoy and Fassbender were outstanding. There's a lot of heart in this and you really feel the connections between the characters. Plus the time in a bottle scene was unique. But best of all it reset the horrendous The Last Stand :)
Top 3 would be:

I agree that the two timelines were well-executed. However, I have this gripe: McAvoy and Fassbender don't look much at all like Stewart and McKellen, who play the older selves of the characters played by the former 2 actors. Fan Bingbing is just, beautiful. What do you mean by "the time in a bottle scene"? The one with Quicksilver in the prison?
My pick for best X-Men film is X-Men: First Class. It's much more entertaining.

First Class is my favourite. But I'd say X2 is the best.

I loved this film as well. It manages to combine the old and new cast beautifully.

"Time in a bottle" was the song playing during, yes, the Quicksilver in the prison scene (sorry, missed the quotations).
I kinda agree about Fassbender and McKellen not looking too much alike but I thought McAvoy and Stewart was spot on. It was a great moment when they come face to face. My only issue was there was not enough future scenes and Iceman, Colossus etc died too easily!
I will say Singer went backwards with Apocalypse, as that was just so....average when compared to DoFP.

I'll have to compare James and Patrick again, taking your word for it. I'm glad someone else noticed the dissimilarity between Ian and Fassbender! How do they explain that?

I think we all noticed. It's just something you have to go with I guess. You get that kind of mis-match a lot in films.

Yes, I would put them in that order as well. Days of Future Past remains my favorite X-Men movie.

I've been watching the movies on sequence and this was another disappointment. They keep creating plot holes (I just created 3 threads on the forum about this movie). And they've been focusing on badass action scenes and leaving weak plots over it. They spend more money on showing mutants awesome powers in action, and leaving out the drama they suffer from discrimination.
As easy it is for them to write reasons for fighting scenes and agony and suffering, it is for them to just write that someone everybody loves is saved by mutants, or that some mutant was voted into politics, and then add to all schools some teaching work to help adolescents identify when their power is starting and then lead them to proper psychological help before any misunderstanding could happen, and create a law for special punishment for anybody who harasses a mutant without reason or instead of calling the police when any mutant misbehaves his powers.

I think this is the one with the angry elf, yes?
If so I'd agree, probably the best of the X-Men films. Better than Logan which was ok but over hyped...
