I decided to watch my copy again today and I continue to marvel at how much talent Lawrence Kasdan was able to gather in front of the camera for this film. Seriously. Every actor was picture perfect for their roles and the setting and action sequences were outstanding. Brian Dennehy makes the perfect villain and Scott Glenn the ideal, stoic hero.
I really wish the Western as a genre wasn't so under-utilized. It's a lean format that allows storytellers to focus on the characters as well as throwing in some incredible action sequences. The last one I truly loved, though I'd call it more of a horror film set in the 1800's than a Western, was Bone Tomahawk with Kurt Russell. (I need to watch The Hateful Eight, but I'm hot and cold about Tarantino since I did not like Django Unchained at all.)
Man, do we need more Westerns!
