It was made in Hollywood before Hollywood censorship got a hold of things-- thus it is very graphic and crass.
Claude Rains was inferior to Vincent Price as the invisible man in the sequel as Price body acted under the bandages way way better.
The film is very 20th century set.
The film is strange to be set in Europe. The dance hall sequence looks too North American. Honestly should have been Canada set.
Gloria Stuart was very inferior to Nan Grey who played the love interest in the sequel. They wrote better for Miss. Grey as they improved writing for women in movies, and Grey's far more appealing very good looks promote viewer interest far better as well. In short. Because if one sees the first sequel first it can fast put this film to shame.
Other valid points are like for one the police were not that distinct in the film. The first sequel had Cecil Kellaway as a cop and he was quite good. Everything about the sequel was better.

This '33 film showed a world in transition. The '40 sequel was after that transition.
