A French girl, escaping from a pimp who kidnapped her, witnesses the crime. The butler convinces his master he is the killer, and must flee. He joins the girl but is caught. She helps police expose the real killer by going undercover as another maid.

Fulton also wins Rose's love, which he does not return. The mine's owner sends his troublesome son, Roland Holt, out West to work at the mine. Before Holt leaves the East he secretly marries Beth Hoover. Upon Holt's arrival, Fulton tries to befriend him, but Holt prefers the company of bad-guy King.

Bummer devrait hériter un fortune de son frère Jonathan, mais les anciens employés de celui-ci, Jim Peterson et Clara Parker, engagent le hors-la-loi Mexican Joe pour l'assassiner. Après sa mort, Clara arrive en ville, prétendant être la veuve de Bummer et de ce fait son héritière. Pendant de temps, Charles est arrêté et condamné pour ce crime. Peterson incite la population à lyncher Charles, mais ce dernier arrive à s'échapper à l'aide de M'Liss et d'un de ses amis, Yuba Bill. Finalement, Peterson est obligé d'avouer sa culpabilité et M'Liss retrouve son héritage et l'amour de l'instituteur.

Mrs. Philip Mason commits suicide after she has an affair with Stephen Lee, a disreputable stockbroker, and sells her husband's securities so that Lee can buy stocks. When Lee goes bankrupt, he blackmails Helen Trent by threatening to reveal silly love letters she wrote to him before she married. Her brother, Willy Grosby, and his fiancée, Helen O'Neil, who lives with the Grosbys, go to retrieve the letters. While Willy waits outside, Lee is knifed to death as he attacks Helen. Lee's friend, Edward Wales, attempts to pin the murder on Helen by having Madame LaFarge, a clairvoyant, conduct a séance. In the darkened room, Wales, through whom Lee's spirit supposedly speaks, is about to name Helen as the murderer, but Wales, who sits in the thirteenth chair, is himself murdered. After Helen confesses to Inspector Donohue that Madame LaFarge is her mother, LaFarge, while conducting another séance, tricks Philip Mason into confessing to the murders.
