Nel film viene raccontata la storia vera di Desmond Doss.

L'attacco alla base americana di Pearl Harbor apre un nuovo fronte delle ostilità in Giappone. Desmond Doss, cresciuto sulle montagne della Virginia e in una famiglia vessata da un padre alcolizzato, decide di arruolarsi e di servire il suo Paese. Ma Desmond non è come gli altri. Cristiano avventista e obiettore di coscienza, il ragazzo rifiuta di impugnare il fucile e uccidere un uomo. Fosse anche nemico. In un mondo dilaniato dalla guerra, Desmond ha deciso di rimettere assieme i pezzi. Arruolato come soccorritore medico e spedito sull'isola di Okinawa combatterà contro l'esercito nipponico, contro il pregiudizio dei compagni e contro i fantasmi di dentro che urlano più forte nel clangore della battaglia.

Profittando dei preziosi consigli e della impeccabile tecnica del venerato maestro di arti marziali, il simpatico ragazzo ha raggiunto un traguardo prestigioso, maturando con la nuova disciplina la propria personalità anche sul piano caratteriale e morale. Quando Miyagi viene richiamato nel suo villaggio natale presso Okinawa dalla notizia della gravissima malattia del vecchio padre, Daniel ottiene di accompagnarlo nel triste viaggio.

L'arrivo del nuovo comandante in una base aerea non è accolto molto bene dai militari e dai piloti che hanno sentito parlare della severità dell'ufficiale. A man brutally murders a married couple and leaves the word “ikari” (“rage”) written with their blood. The killer undergoes plastic surgery and flees. At three different locations in Japan, a male stranger appears. People suspect that the stranger might be the murderer.

The Americans are swiftly closing on Okinawa, an island just south of the Japanese mainland. The Imperial command sends top generals and several army divisions to defend it at all costs. The mission quickly degenerates as vital resources and troops are diverted to other islands. After a civilian evacuation ends in tragedy most of non-combatants are forced to remain on the island. Many convert to soldier status. Tokyo sends mixed messages that squander time and resources, as when they order the defenders to build an airstrip for aircraft that never come. The truth soon becomes obvious: the high command decides that the island cannot be held and effectively abandons the Okinawan defenders. When the Americans land many troops are deployed in the wrong places. As the slaughter mounts, a suicidal attitude takes hold. Okinawa becomes a death trap, for civilian volunteers and non-combatants as well.

With only 2 weeks to learn how to play instruments and prepare for their first show, the performance is predictably humiliating. In order to save pride they decide to give it another shot, but this time they ditch the instruments for a sampler and stay truer to themselves. Will Toru be able to capture Nagisa’s heart? Will Yui ever confess her love to Toru or will she just keep practicing her advanced pro wrestling techniques on him instead?

In the closing days of World War II, Japanese-American Hiromi, a girl age 16, encounters an American deserter, Bob, and a Japanese soldier, Iwabuchi, living together in a cave on a small island in Okinawa. The two men are deserters from their armies; yet both vow never to harm another human being again. Hiromi looks after the deserters until another soldier appears and the peace of the cave is shattered. It leads to the death of three of them and a fascinating mystery that isn't solved until the present day.
