La storia di Joan Stanley che, nata inglese ma simpatizzante del partito comunista e dell'Unione Sovietica, divenne funzionaria del governo britannico per essere poi reclutata come spia dal KGB a metà degli anni Trenta del Novecento e che riuscì a trasferire segreti militari e politici mantenendo la sua identità segreta per oltre mezzo secolo.
Guy Bennet, un vecchio inglese che fece la spia per il Kgb e dovette fuggire in Russia, racconta ad un giornalista la sua giovinezza che dovrebbe spiegare la sua "scelta" di vita.
