Im Jahr 2000 wurde der Ehemann von Maixabel Lasa, Juan Maria Jauregi, von der ETA getötet. Elf Jahre später erhält sie eine unglaubliche Bitte: Einer der Männer, die Juan getötet haben, will sich mit ihr im Gefängnis Nanclares de la Oca in Araba (Spanien) treffen, wo er seine Strafe verbüßt, nachdem er die Verbindungen zur Terrorgruppe abgebrochen hat. Trotz ihrer Vorbehalte und ihres immensen Schmerzes willigt Maixabel Lasa ein, sich von Angesicht zu Angesicht mit denen zu treffen, die das Leben ihrer Gefährtin seit ihrem 16. Lebensjahr beendet haben. „Jeder verdient eine zweite Chance“, sagte sie, als sie gefragt wurde, warum sie bereit sei, den Mann zu konfrontieren, der ihren Ehemann getötet hat.

Rafa liebt seine Heimat Sevilla und denkt zunächst gar nicht daran, Andalusien zu verlassen. Das Leben hier ist schön, es gibt tolle Frauen und heißen Flamenco, warum also gehen? Die Einstellung des Andalusiers verändert sich, als er die Baskin Amaia kennenlernt. Sie ist immun gegen Rafas erprobten Charme, was er nicht akzeptiert und daher mobil wird. Der Mann aus dem Süden geht Amaia hinterher – in den Norden an die spanisch-französische Grenze, ins Baskenland. Auf einmal ist Rafa in einer fremden Welt, mit einer anderen Sprache, anderen Bräuchen, anderer Mentalität – und muss diese ihm nicht vertraute Kultur adaptieren. Amaias Vater Koldo ist zu Besuch da und erwartet, ihren Bräutigam kennenzulernen, der sie allerdings hat sitzen lassen – Rafa springt ein, gibt sich als Verlobter aus. Die Anpassung wird zum Abenteuer. Aber muss Rafa wirklich jemand anderes werden, um Amaias Herz zu erobern?

Amaia, die gerade Mutter geworden ist, beschließt, nach der vorübergehenden Abwesenheit ihres Partners zur Beratung in das Haus ihrer Eltern an der baskischen Küste zurückzukehren.

Neither are we aware of the details of this relationship; but what we do know is that, in addition to their interest in art, they share a concern for the difficulties of carrying out their personal and professional lives in the present. By focusing on the peripheral or hidden details of some paintings in the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, this narrator relates several stories linked to the social, economic and psychological conditions of the artists, both past and present.

In the mid-1980s, the GAL, a Spanish paramilitary group, pursues and assassinates members of the terrorist gang ETA who have taken refuge in the sanctuary they have created in the south of France. Grégoire Fortin, advisor to the French Minister of Justice, and Domingo 'Txomin' Iturbe, leader of ETA, are forced to negotiate in order to find a solution to the violence that plagues the region.

Opening at the funeral mass for Mikel, we flashback to those that played a part in Mikel's life and death; his estranged wife, his traditional Basque mother, a female impersonator and friend to Mikel in his coming out, and even the local priest.
