In post-apocalyptic New York, three tribes of survivors (the Norms, the Mutates and the Upriver People) vie for the right to exist. When the treacherous Upriver People attack the Norms, kill their chief and take their people captive, two Norm refugee men must find a way to ally with the Mutates, who have previously kidnapped Norm women in an effort to reproduce healthy children, to rout the Uprivers, who also seek to kill off the Mutates.

Le monde a été détruit par une guerre nucléaire. Tony Lamont et Ruby, pris dans une tempête de poussière, tentent d'atteindre le ranch, isolé, de Rick et Louise Maddison. Jim, le père de Louise, refuse de les laisser entrer car il n'y a assez de nourriture que pour trois personnes. Mais Tony s'introduit dans la maison. Devant le fait accompli, Jim finit par les accueillir. Il leur fait changer de vêtements et se laver à l'eau pure. Pendant ce temps, Rick a trouvé une victime des rayonnements, Radek, qui est très mal en point. Mais contre toute attente, Radek se remet très vite et montre un comportement anormal. Il ne semble pas manger mais se montre très en forme. Bien vite, il apparaît que Radek est un mutant, qui chasse pour sa survie et se nourrit de lapins crus. Il se montre même cannibale en dévorant un vieux prospecteur réfugié dans une mine.

Un groupe de souris vivent une vie bien tranquille à l'ombre de ruines déroutantes, et se préparent à fêter Noël, les adultes apprennent une chanson aux petits. Parmi les mots, il y en a un qui les intrigue, car les jeunes n'ont jamais entendu parler de ces hommes dont il est question. Une souris âgée et un prêtre qui a lui connu les humains leur expliquent donc qu'ils étaient des créatures obsédées par la destruction de leur prochain...

Four astronauts returning from man's first mission to Mars enter a time warp and crash on a 26th Century Earth devastated by atomic war. Son titre est constitué des premières lettres de ses quatre réalisateurs. Il est composé de : La Virginité (Illibatezza) de Roberto Rossellini; Le Nouveau Monde (Il mondo nuovo) de Jean-Luc Godard; La Ricotta de Pier Paolo Pasolini; Le Poulet de grain (Il pollo ruspante) de Ugo Gregoretti. Le sketch de Pasolini provoqua la mise sous séquestre du film par la censure italienne pour « offense à la religion d'État ». Le film fut alors exploité en Italie sans le sketch de Pasolini, sous le titre : Laviamoci il cervello (« Lavons-nous le cerveau »). Il est resté inédit en France jusqu'en 1991.
