Nella Londra vittoriana del 1880, il drammaturgo William Gilbert e il compositore Arthur Sullivan sono celebri compositori di operette. I due sono entrati in crisi per mancanza di idee. Sullivan, scoraggiato dall'insuccesso, vorrebbe abbandonare il mondo dell'operetta per dedicarsi alla musica classica. A Londra, nel frattempo è scoppiata la passione per l'arte ed i costumi orientali, e a Gilbert viene l'ispirazione per una nuova opera, cui darà il titolo di "Mikado".
