Menschen erträgt Zahnarzt Dr. Pincus am besten, wenn er sie bei der Behandlung kurzfristig verstummen lassen kann. Nach einer Operation, der er sich unterziehen musste, ist es mit der Ruhe vorbei. Plötzlich sieht er Geister, die Hilfe einfordern. Der lästigste ist Frank, der seine Witwe nicht in eine neue Ehe ziehen lassen will. Pincus willigt ein, diese Beziehung zu sabotieren, sich Gwen selbst als Lover zu offerieren.
Frank ist Besitzer eines Ladens für Schaufensterpuppen. Er lebt ein eher zurückhaltendes und verschlossenes Leben. Doch dies ändert sich, als die junge und hübsche Anna in sein Leben tritt. Für ihre neue Ausstellung wendet sie sich an Frank. Aus dem Treffen entwickelt sich eine Freundschaft. Doch der Schein trügt. Denn unter der Oberfläche verstärkt sich seine geheime Besessenheit. Je länger die Freundschaft anhält, desto heftiger tritt seine Manie zum Vorschein.
Im 19.Jahrhunderts sind William Gilbert und Arthur Sullivan die Stars der komischen Operette im ganzen viktorianischen Königreich. Doch 1884 startet ihr gemeinsames Stück "Prinzessin Ida" zwar mit Publikumserfolg, aber ohne berauschende Kritiken. Für Sullivan, den Komponisten, der Beweis seiner Vermutung, dass er musikalisch auf der Stelle tritt, weil er stets nach Gilberts immer nach demselben Schema aufgebauten märchenhaften Stücken arbeiten muß. Während Sullivan für ein Jahr nach Europa geht, versucht sich Gilbert an einem neuen Stück, doch sein Libretto wird abgelehnt. Erst als Mrs.Gilbert, die sonst von ihrem Mann ignoriert wird, ihn in eine Japan-Ausstellung schleppt, fühlt Gilbert den Hauch der Inspiration.Und auch Sullivan, der auf seinem Weg zu einer ernsthaften großen Oper oder Sinfonie noch nicht recht weitergekommen ist, läßt sich anstecken. Bald stecken sie voll in den Proben zu ihrem zumindest von der Inszenierung realistischsten Stück: "The Mikado"...
