À son arrivée, il apprend que ses parents se séparent et que son père, John Senior, doit retourner à Atlanta pour poursuivre son métier de journaliste, tandis qu’il doit rester avec sa mère et sa grand‐mère. Ce départ perturbe le jeune Johnny, qui décide de s’enfuir de la plantation, la nuit tombée, avec un simple baluchon. En chemin, il est attiré par la voix d’un vieil homme noir, « l’Oncle Rémus », qui narre les histoires d’un personnage nommé Frère Lapin.
