Gilbert hatte den jüdischen Jungen aus Polen vor 14 Jahren in seinem Haus aufgenommen, um die musikalische Entwicklung des Ausnahmetalents zu fördern. Martin wuchs mit ihm auf und betrachtete ihn als Bruder. Er kann Dovidl, wie der Junge daheim genannt werden wollte, nicht vergessen. 35 Jahre später begibt er sich, einer vagen Spur folgend, auf eine Reise nach Polen und nach New York, um ihn zu finden. Es begleiten ihn die Erinnerungen an sein Aufwachsen während des Krieges mit dem rebellischen, von einer Aura der Einsamkeit umgebenen Jungen.
Paris in 1942. Annette is 20 years old, Jean is barely older, they love each other and the future is bright for them. But the deportation of the Jews of France will change their destiny. Upset at the idea of their only son marrying a Jewish woman, Jean Jausion's parents decide to keep young Annette Zelman away from them... and denounce her to the Gestapo. The machine was launched, but it was too late. Annette was deported to Auschwitz on June 22, 1942.
In 2004 Sheldon Oberman, a Jewish storyteller from Winnipeg, passed away. At his funeral the presiding Rabbi said that Sheldon’s spirit was with the congregants in the sanctuary. For filmmaker Saul Henteleff this was a revelation that began a personal and spiritual journey into the meaning of Jewish death. My Jewish Death is the result of this journey.
