Comme de nombreux autres Parisiens, Monsieur Hulot a du mal à s'adapter à la modernité de la capitale, à y trouver sa place et à entretenir des rapports humains.

Monsieur Arpel est féru de modernisme. Directeur d'une fabrique de tuyaux en plastique, il a doté sa maison de tous les perfectionnements techniques possibles à ce jour. Pourtant, cette maison pourvue de robots est loin d'apporter une atmosphère détendue à son fils, Gérard, 10 ans. Le beau-frère de monsieur Arpel, monsieur Hulot, fantasque et bohème, occupe un modeste deux pièces dans un quartier populaire. Il invite de temps à autre son jeune neveu, dressé à l'ordre rigoureux qui règne chez lui, à découvrir son domaine de fantaisie et de liberté. Sa sœur, maintenant madame Arpel, espère secrètement qu'il épousera sa voisine, mais c'est compter sans l'esprit discrètement récalcitrant et frondeur de Hulot, résolument épris de liberté...

Dessinateur chez Altra, une petite entreprise parisienne en pleine expansion, monsieur Hulot a inventé une voiture de camping révolutionnaire, équipée d'une tente et de multiples gadgets. Ses employeurs tiennent absolument à présenter cette merveille d'ingéniosité au Salon de l'automobile qui se tiendra bientôt à Amsterdam. Après avoir chargé le prototype sur un camion, monsieur Hulot prend la direction des Pays-Bas, accompagné d'une attachée de presse. Dès la sortie de Paris, le convoi s'engage sur une autoroute surchargée. Embouteillages, crevaison, panne d'essence, accident, contrôle des douanes : la fatalité n'épargnera rien au génial inventeur...
