Le roi Henry VIII se morfond de ne pas avoir d'héritier mâle. Afin d'être introduit à la cour, Sir Thomas Boleyn ordonne à sa fille de séduire le Roi. Mais c'est de son autre fille, Mary, que celui-ci s'éprend. Les deux soeurs, tout d'abord complices, deviennent rapidement des rivales prêtes à tout pour gagner les faveurs du roi.

En 1529, Thomas More, juriste britannique, succède au cardinal Wolsey comme chancelier d'Henri VIII. D'amis que sont le roi et son ministre, ils vont devenir ennemis du fait du refus de Thomas de consentir au remariage du roi. Thomas ira jusqu'au martyre, avec prudence et sans fanatisme.

À Londres, vers le milieu du XVIe siècle, le jeune Edouard, Prince de Galles et fils d'Henry VIII, aimerait échapper à l'étiquette de la Cour et s'amuser au-dehors avec des enfants de son âge. Dans le même temps, Tom Canty, gamin pauvre des rues, rêve d'échapper à sa condition. Le destin fera se rencontrer les deux enfants qui s'échangeront leurs "rôles" respectifs, non sans risques, car le Comte d'Hertford complote contre le Trône : il tente de faire assassiner le Prince à la faveur de son escapade et de prendre Tom, devenu Edward, sous sa coupe. L'intervention d'un mercenaire, Miles Hendon, permettra de faire échouer cette conspiration.

Comment après avoir usé et assassiné plusieurs femmes, le terrible Henry VIII se laissera mener par le bout du nez jusqu'à un âge avancé par Catherine Parr.

He brings Lord Richard Percy, Anne's first love, back from exile so that he can find an excuse to accuse her of adultery. With the unwitting aid of Smeaton, a court musician, and Lord Rochefort, Anne's brother, the trap is easily sprung. This 2011 live recording from the Wiener Staatsoper showcases Anna Netrebko as she "scored a personal triumph" in her debut as the hapless Tudor Queen, while her stage partners - notably Elīna Garanča as Jane Seymour and Ildebrando D'Arcangelo as Henry VIII - were likewise showered with critical acclaim.
