Daniel y el señor Miyagi viajan a Okinawa, a la pequeña aldea en la que el anciano nació y de la que tuvo que marcharse por un asunto de honor. Su padre está gravemente enfermo y quiere verlo, pero también le espera su antiguo amor de juventud. La llegada del señor MIyagi reabre unas heridas que el tiempo y la distancia parecían haber borrado.

Basada en el famoso manga de Hisachi Ishii, esta película cuenta pequeñas e imaginativas historias de la vida diaria de una típica familia de clase media de Tokyo. Los Yamada son Takashi y Matsuko (el padre y la madre), Shige (la suegra), Noboru (el hijo), Nonoko (la hija) y Pochi (el perro de la familia).

Japón, años 50. Como todos los días, los miembros de una familia se disponen a afrontar sus problemas, sueños y realidades. Un ingeniero de Tokyo llamado Kariya llega a una primitiva isla tropical para excavar un pozo que suministre agua a los campos de azúcar. En la isla, cuenta con la asistencia de Kametaro, un miembro de la familia Futori. Nekichi Futori está encadenado en un hoyo que debe ser excavado porque cree que debe apaciguar a los dioses antes de que acaben con la protección de la isla. Nekichi está enamorado de su hermana Uma, sacerdotisa chamán en el templo sagrado, que contiene el único agua potable cerca del campo de azúcar. Asimismo, ella es la amante de Ryu, el jefe del campo. A middle-aged husband of a younger woman finds her youth intimidating to the point that he cannot become aroused. His solution involves the introduction of his daughter's lover to his wife.

A sendup of the stereotypical Japanese family: dad is a salaryman jerk, unable to relate to anyone; mom is a hopeless housewife; the older son is a moderate academic success; but the younger son is a rebellious goof-off for whom a tutor must be hired. The tutor, played by the prototypical bad boy actor Matsuda Yusaku, proceeds to blow the entire family apart.

Minako, a Tokyo housewife, is depressed that everyone has an active life outside the home except her. Taking her inspiration from TV reports of a hitch-hiking chainsaw murderer, Minako decides to spice up her life by finding a young lover and running off with him by faking her kidnapping. While her family frets and worries, Minako has a wonderful time. Eventually, though, she decides it's time to go back to her family. Her lover, however, isn't ready for the fun to end, and Minako's fake kidnapping soon becomes all too real.

Toru grew up in alpine countryside around Mount Tate. As a child, he resented the yearly trek up the mountain with his father to prepare their mountain hut for the summer season of climbers. When Toru grows up, he leaves his hometown and enters the working world as a stock trader. One day, Toru receives word that his father has passed away. He returns to Mount Tate once again, and becomes conscious of a new calling. But, does Toru have what it takes to follow in his father footsteps?

When she meets a Japanese guy named Mochizuki, they become close. This is when her sibling Umi visits. Umi was born inter-sex and had undergone gender reassignment surgery to become a woman. Umi encourages Sora and Mochizuki to fall in love, but Sora becomes mentally unstable.
