Atto I: in una fattoria dell'Emilia crescono insieme Olmo, figlio di contadini, e Alfredo, erede del padrone, nati nello stesso giorno del 1900. Dopo i primi scioperi nei campi e la guerra 1915-18, il fascismo agrario dà una mano ai padroni. I due giovani si sposano. Atto II: negli anni '30 le strade di Olmo e Alfredo si separano. Il primo, vedovo, fa il norcino e continua la lotta; il secondo si rinchiude nel privato. Il 25 aprile 1945 si processano i padroni, e i due si ricongiungono. Fondato sulla dialettica dei contrari: è un film sulla lotta di classe in chiave antipadronale finanziato con dollari americani; cerca di fondere il cinema classico americano con il realismo socialista sovietico (più un risvolto finale da film-balletto cinese); è un melodramma politico in bilico tra Marx e Freud che attinge a Verdi, al romanzo dell'Ottocento, al mélo hollywoodiano degli anni '50. Senza evitare i rischi della ridondanza, Bertolucci gioca le sue carte sui due versanti del racconto.
