Le fossé apparaît dès le premier jour alors que Bachir leur propose une dictée hors de leur portée, tirée de Honoré de Balzac. Personnage énigmatique qui pénètre dans un monde de femmes et de réformes pédagogiques, Bachir s'attache peu à peu à Alice et Simon, deux élèves qui se démarquent par leur charisme et qui portent leur lot de culpabilité quant à la mort de leur professeur. Quant à Bachir, personne à l'école ne connaît sa vie algérienne. On ne se doute pas qu'il risque l'expulsion du pays à tout moment?
