Il film racconta la straordinaria avventura umana e politica di Aung San Suu Kyi (l'attivista birmana Premio Nobel per la Pace nel 1991), costretta agli arresti domiciliari quasi ininterrottamente dal 1989 al 2007 e separata a forza dal marito e dai figli residenti in Inghilterra.
