Dopo l'ennesimo attacco della banda dei banditi di McQuown e la conseguente umiliazione dello sceriffo locale, gli abitanti del piccolo villaggio di Warlock decidono di far intervenire Clay Blaisedell, noto mercenario dalla pistola d'oro le cui gesta riecheggiano anche in un libro di cronache. Clay arriva a Warlock assieme al compagno e mentore Tom Morgan, con il quale decide di far aprire un saloon per bere e giocare d'azzardo. Quando si presentano gli uomini di McQuown, i due giustizieri li minacciano e li fanno fuggire tutti, ad eccezione del giovane Johnny Gannon, che decide di restare in città e di smettere con furti, assalti e imboscate. Mentre gli abitanti del villaggio sono pronti a festeggiare il nuovo corso di pace e giustizia, non lontano Tom Morgan uccide un uomo durante un assalto alla diligenza condotto da parte degli uomini di McQuown, così che interviene lo sceriffo della contea più vicina per promuovere legalmente un nuovo amministratore della giustizia.
