L'accident aurait-il pu être évité ? Ouvriers, agriculteurs, routiers, marins-pêcheurs ou livreurs à vélo : en France, deux personnes meurent chaque jour au travail. Leur disparition fait parfois l'objet de quelques lignes dans la rubrique faits divers de la presse locale. D'autres restent handicapés à vie, promis à la mort sociale. Ces "gueules cassées" du capitalisme et de la course au profit sont 35 000 chaque année. Pourquoi ces "faits divers" ne deviennent-ils pas "faits de société" ?

C'est le portrait d'un juge de la Cour Suprême à Taïwan, Monsieur Chen, à la veille de sa retraite, dont le père, agriculteur en haute montagne, a été assassiné à coups de couteaux, en avril 1959 par un clan du village voisin, pour une sombre histoire de truie reproductrice. À l’époque Monsieur Chen n’est qu’un petit garçon de 9 ans qui accompagne sa mère lors des innombrables audiences. Témoin de la manière arrogante avec laquelle les magistrats de la République de Chine humilient sa mère alphabétisée en japonais, l’enfant se demande pourquoi un juge serait la dernière personne à décider du destin de quelqu’un et pourquoi lui aussi ne pourrait pas jouer ce rôle.
