If you're in a good mood and don't want to be, then this is the show for you! There are no good guys here. No people to root for, only bad and worse and worst people. Casual murders and bloodletting. No scruples, morality, responsibility. Depressing, dour and defeating.

Then there's "Dr. Eggers Hyde, PHd." whose writings the banker follows, opening up two very different versions of The Large Farm. That would be between the modern Factory Farm (which will happen later) vs. The Collective Farm. In episode #2, "Which side are you on?" We find out that there are more secrets just below the surface. The town Sheriff and the local Madam are less than happy that "The Cowboy," who shot a farmer and brought his body into the Speakeasy has scared customers away from their businesses. The "townies," for their part, take up guns as The Black Legion to scare the farmers, which leads to a drive by shooting at the church. The coal company strike gets unneeded "lead poisoning" as a female Pinkerton "cleans house." This level of "action" is enough to tune out this mess after episode #3.

Thank you for the clarifications, because I could not tell who was who or what was what in that fest, all I could tell was that it was crap.

In episode #3, "One Penny," things to unfold like a coiled serpent. Pinkerton agent Nunn, after killing the Pennsylvania coal miners' strike leader and his lieutenants, takes his daughter under her wing as cover and to "educate her in the ways of a 'civilized young lady" as they have breakfast in Ohio, on their way to the next case in Chicago. At the foreclosed farm of the late dairy farmer who dared to break the farmer's strike, it's auction time for ALL the household goods. A family Bible is put up for auction, which The Strikebreaker buys for $20...then hands it to the widow. The next day, the bank is set to auction off the farm, which features a "designated buyer," as outlined by "Eggers Hyde, PhD." The Stirkebreaker and the Black prostitute have car trouble on the way back to town, and The Black Legion rolls up, armed and dangerous. She escapes, but he is taken for judgement, balanced on a box, to "hang by the neck until dead" if he insists on keeping company with his "negroid whore." The Preacher and his wife hatch a plan to short-circuit the farm auction, while the Black prostitute visits her father, the up-for-election town Sheriff. The Sheriff rolls up to a barn, tells The Black Legion to vamoose, and has a tough conversation with The Strikebreaker. The next day, the farmers "armed with The Good Book," comandeer the auction, allowing the widow to reclaim the farm for "one penny." The banker vows to overcome the armed farmers, as The Preacher reveals some of the back story on his first wife.

@Patrick E. Abe,
Seriously, your write ups seem more interesting than the show.
After watching episode #3, will you continue to watch? Do you think the show is improving ?

Well, the violence level and the search for "the least bad character(s)" had me wondering how much more of this I could take. But then, there's a similar level of violence in movies set during the Depression, such as "Places In The Heart." I'll keep watching on an episode-by-episode basis, "hoping for the best, while expecting thei worst." (Just like the "fake news/Twit Storm"present, sigh.) I decided to hang in there and Tuffysmom, I totally agree with you and it has been interesting finding out the brothers background. Unfortunately, the series has been canceled-this according to that other site that does not deserve to be mentioned ever for dismantling their message boards.

I actually don't think this is a very dour or depressing show though of course it is expected to be dark since it's set during The Depression. But one show I loved but was taxing to watch is Carnivale, if you think this is dour then Carnivale must be hell for you. Lol

I also like the actors for their roles, the main guy is Irish I think, is impressive, and actually looks older than Green who plays the older brother.
