Discuss Too Old to Die Young

I was very impressed on the first viewing. Nicolas Winding Refn was always very formalistic and visual but minimalistic on dialogs, and here he just continues his style with even sharper approach. Even though it is a mini series, the approach is completely cinematic. It is just one long movie. The cinematography is just stunning, long shots with very little movement or slight camera pans are absolutely hypnotic and so pleasant to watch, like you are submerged in a pleasantly warm liquid. This is really great filmmaking. The story itself is not always clear and slow at times, but it just feels in right pace and very intriguing. A well done mix of mystery, conspiracy and surrealism with ultra violent and shocking moments.

And the more time passes the more I appreciate this work of art, very rare you can find a gem like that nowadays. And I am not a big Refn fan, although I watched almost everything he's done. I didn't like the Drive, Valhalla Rising and Bronson. And Only God Forgives was absolutely forgettable. I failed to find a strong points behind them, felt like a miss. I did enjoy the Pusher trilogy a lot, especially the first one. And I very much liked The Neon Demon, it finally felt like a coherent, well established idea that was done very well, besides the great visual style. And Too Old to Die Young continues this form, it feels like Refn was finally able to focus everything together and show what he is capable of.

The only bad thing here is that this series failed to get more appreciation from the critics and the public, and that we will not have a continuation of this truly bizarre story. In a way, the ending is still somewhat satisfying overall, but I still wish I would've seen another season.

If you like Refn then watch it. Really memorable and awe-inspiring. And it's really good in every episode.

Not a spoiler, but in one of the last episodes a character walks through abandoned building of a sorts. There is a lot of play with lights vs dark there and he walks slowly for many minutes with nothing happening. But it's very suspenseful and shot so beautifully that I could just watch it more and more, just that character walking in empty building. Great stuff.
