Gilles Lapouge

Biography

Gilles Lapouge (7 November 1923 – 31 July 2020) was a French writer and journalist with the daily O Estado de S. Paulo. He won the 2007 Prix Femina Essai.

He grew up in Algeria, where his father was in the military. After studying history and geography, he became a journalist. In 1950 he moved to Brazil. For three years he worked for the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, where he remained a correspondent in France for more than forty years. Back in France, he worked in Le Monde, the Figaro Littéraire and Combat. He participated in the Bernard Pivot program, "Ouvrez les guillemets" ("Open the quotes") which became Apostrophes". In France Culture, he produced the show "Agora" and then "En étrange pays" ("in foreign countries").

He served on the editorial board of La Quinzaine littéraire. He appeared at the Étonnants voyageurs festival at Saint-Malo. He died at the age of 96 on 31 July 2020.

Gilles Lapouge, né le 7 novembre 1923 à Digne et mort le 31 juillet 2020 à Neuilly-sur-Seine, est un écrivain et journaliste français.

Gilles Lapouge passe son enfance en Algérie où son père est militaire. Après des études d'histoire et de géographie, il devient journaliste. En 1950, il part pour le Brésil. Pendant trois ans, il travaille pour le quotidien brésilien O Estado de São Paulo, dont il restera le correspondant en France pendant plus de quarante ans. De retour en France, il collabore au Monde, au Figaro Littéraire et à Combat.

Il participe à l'émission de Bernard Pivot Ouvrez les guillemets qui deviendra Apostrophes. À France Culture, il produit l'émission Agora, puis En étrange pays. Il fait partie du comité de rédaction de La Quinzaine littéraire. Il a reçu le prix Pierre-Ier de Monaco pour l'ensemble de son œuvre et le Prix Joseph-Kessel pour La Mission des frontières. Il a participé régulièrement à Saint-Malo au festival Étonnants Voyageurs.
