Beyond critical merit (or lack thereof, depending upon whom you ask), and the silly contrived competition with Barbie that should never have been a thing, Oppenheimer has paid a splendid $7.78 which makes it a terrific financial success (FWIW).

Nolan is aiming for $1.1 billion to surpass the $1.081 billion of his own movie "The Dark Knight Rises (2012)".

The 'real' men do see it as kind of a competition - "Oppenheimer (2023)" has been recommended frequently by everyone with negative reviews of "Barbie (2023)" - and they - the men and some women - have gone multiple times to see "Oppenheimer (2023)", even taking their teenage sons.

Isn't it leaving IMAX in 2 days? I see projections putting it at $950m max after it's run in China. That's very impressive for a hard R film. Nolan should be proud of that even if it doesn't hit a bil.

"Oppenheimer (2023)" will be in the theatres until October 30, 2023 and its run can be extended until the end of 2023, or it can be re-released. Whenever it is possible, it will return in IMAX. With the delay of movies like "Dune 2" until 2024, there are already plans to do this. Nolan is on a mission to make this the first billion dollar R-rated documentary and he has more than 60 days left to do this. He is on a tour, actively promoting it everywhere. Italy - release date 23 August 2023 - became the first West-Eurpean country where it beat "Barbie (2023)". He is the first major Hollywood director since 2019 to be at the premiere (30 august 2023) in China, where, like in South Korea and India, it is expected to surpass "Barbie (2023)"'s gross box office by a factor of 3 or more.

Where do you get information on theatrical release dates?

Nolan is on a mission to make this the first billion dollar R-rated documentary

Docudrama at best.

Kudos to him for hustling.

it is expected to surpass "Barbie (2023)"'s gross box office by a factor of 3 or more.

Still can't grasp why that means anything (I only mentioned Barbie in my comment to say I was returning to just talking financial performance not critical reviews, artistic merit, arbitrary comparison or anything else beyond itself).

Same documentary category as Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, I'm sure ;)

Nolan's visit to China was successful in promoting "Oppenheimer (2023)" with a $30.4 million opening there. It's expected to make more than the $53 million of Nolan's own movie "The Dark Knight Rises (2012)" there. It's also continuing its success in other Asian countries, e.g. India ($18.8 million) and South Korea where it has passed $19 million ("Barbie (2023)"'s box office total run in South Korea is $4.27 million, performing worse than even "The Little Mermaid (2023)" which made $5.06 million). After 6 weeks the worldwide gross box office of "Oppenheimer (2023)" is almost $853 million (4 September 2023). With 8 more weeks in the cinema - and so many movies being delayed until 2024 - there is nothing stopping it from passing the $1 billion.

The question is: 'now that "Barbie (2023)" is leaving the theatres and will start streaming, will "Oppenheimer (2023)", with 8 more weeks to go and an expected re-release, be able to pass "Barbie (2023)"'s worldwide gross box office of $1.38 billion?'

You ought to pause to acknowledge that Barbie did what you said it would not be able to do - surpass Super Mario Bros worldwide.

I'm pretty sure you didn't adjust TDK for (worldwide) inflation, it would be way more than 1.08bn nowadays.

The real men would not take their children to either if these trash movies whether it's Barbie or Commieheimer, there was not really good movie released this summer until later An anatomy of a fall, heck even Concrete Utopia is better than these two and it's not very smart movie.
